In the meanwhile, the vet assistants placed the dog's lifeless body in a black bag and stored it in the big freezer, ready to be picked up by the cremation company that came twice a week. Once leaving their best friend behind, the clients often stopped by me to pay for the charges but often this had to be post-poned because that was the last thing the owners wanted to think about. The euthanasia medication most vets use is pentobarbital, a seizure medication. In large doses, it quickly renders the pet unconscious. It shuts down her heart and brain functions usually within one or two minutes. It could be given by shot or by an IV in one of her legs.

Last year, toward the end of August, I made one of the most difficult decisions in my life. I decided to put Annabelle, our 14-year-old family dog, to sleep. My favorite picture of Annabelle. Her later years, as they are for many of us, had not been kind. She had lost some of her sight and hearing, much of her.

We took her for one last walk around Saratoga Springs, letting her lead the way. The people at Upstate Animal Medical Center couldn’t have been more compassionate, even crying with us as Annabelle’s breathing slowed, then ceased. Fed her an entire pack of hotdogs.

There are various steps in the process of euthanasia, although nowadays almost all dogs are euthanized by injection. What's going on and why could be an entire article on its own. The short version, though, is that it is almost always a very peaceful process. There's a reason that people use the euphemism “put to sleep” to.

It would be nice if they could be with us for decades, but sadly this is not the case. It’s the most difficult part of having a dog. Having to say good-bye is something every dog lover faces eventually.
