Now that tramadol is a schedule IV controlled substance patients may experience some changes. Now, according to Federal law, a tramadol prescription can only have five refills and is only good for six months from the date written. Additionally, according to Massachusetts law, a prescription for tramadol.

And now it has happened two times in less than two months. It has only happened a couple times in the course of my 20+ year pharmacy career. I am talking about the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) decision to reschedule tramadol as of August 18, 2014 and now hydrocodone combination products (HCP) as of October 6, 2014.

Prior to August 18, 2014 tramadol was not considered a controlled substance in any schedule. This means, practically speaking, that there were few restrictions on how (and how much) a physician could prescribe it.

As a chronic migraineur, I am highly upset that tramadol or ultram is becoming a controlled substance later this month. My Neuro is very picky about pain meds and I'm glad she is but I'm worried that now that tramadol has become a controlled substance she won't prescribe it to me any longer. She does.

Veterinarians and veterinary professionals should be aware that tramadol is now considered a scheduled IV controlled drug. This may affect dispensing.

Don’t want to deal with this? Make sure your clinic surrenders their stock of tramadol or transfers all quantities of tramadol to a person registered with the DEA by this deadline of August 18, 2014.

In other words, veterinary professions must ensure compliance with record keeping, security (e.g., kept in a drug box), registration and reporting requirements. For veterinarians who handle, stock, or dispense tramadol or tramadol-containing substances, they will be subject to the regulatory controls and administrative, civil, and criminal sanctions applicable to schedule IV controlled substances.

What does this mean to you as a veterinary professional?

While tramadol has been assessed by the DEA as having a low potential for abuse as compared to schedule III drugs, the DEA concluded that abuse of trammel can lead to “limited physical or psychological dependence.”
